A Cold Morning

I was sorting through papers and came across random words on a scrap of paper. I wondered what they meant. Then I realized it was a haiku that I composed a year or two ago. It was undated. I have a feeling I was lying in bed and didn't want to get up because it was cold. Hmmm. Sounds about right.

                                        Gotta get up
                                        Hurry to bathroom
                                        Relief after seven hours.

Guns Kill

There was another school shooting last week.

A 14-year-old boy, using an AR-style rifle which his father gave him for Christmas, killed two students and two teachers and wounded 9 others at Apalachee High School in Georgia.

Guns kill. Books liberate. Why are books being banned, while guns are not? The majority of Americans favor sensible gun regulation.

Fractured Nursery Rhyme

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Contemplating a garden hose.

She put in her thumb
And pulled out a plum
Then stuffed everything up her nose.

St Patrick's Day

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary takes control
Speaking words of wisdom,
Make cinnamon rolls.

I stitched the cloth covers many years ago.

A Chilly Morning

Earlier this week I woke one morning shortly before 5:00.  Too early to get up.  So, I let my mind wander, and I came up with this haiku.

One of Those Nights

I composed this haiku in my head this morning before 7 a.m.

Sometimes you just have one of those nights when you can't sleep.

Haiku: Snowflakes

I composed this while walking at the rec center this morning and seeing snowflakes through the windows. Admittedly I don't think of cottonwood fluffs as signs of Spring -- usually see them in May or June -- but that's what the snow made me think of.

My Own Poem

I posted this on Facebook in October 2018:

Whose bike this is I do not know
He left it hither even though
He fled on foot down the path
Hoping it would remain safe just so.

This bike had been abandoned near the park district's walking path along the Phinney Branch. I came across it on one of my "morning walks." The poem is modeled after Robert Frost's Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening. I probably spent the rest of my walk composing my little poem in my head.

Smile

Smiling is infectious.
You catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I walked around the corner
And someone saw me grin.
When he smiled I realized
I had passed it on to him.

I thought about the smile,
And then realized its worth.
A single smile, just like mine,
Could travel ‘round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin,
Don't leave it undetected.
Let's start an epidemic quick,
And get the world infected!

A Spider's Demise

There once was this silly spider
Who spun her web wider and wider
          Until one day she tripped
          Got entangled and flipped
And she died because no one untied her
